When it comes to buying a mattress, getting just the right feel is crucial. Mattresses are a major investment and they play a critical role in your quality of life. Unfortunately, many people have purchased a new mattress only to find that it feels entirely different in their home than it did in the showroom when they first tried it. For some, it may feel softer, but for most, it may feel firmer. This is actually to be expected.

Why Your New Mattress Feels Firmer Than in Store

Is your new mattress too firm? A brand new mattress will always be firmer – sometimes much firmer, than it will become over time after the “break in” period. This firmness is caused by the foam layers. As you continue to sleep on your mattress, the pressure from your body will relax the foam and mold it more and more into your sleeping form. This creates what we call a body impression (not to be confused with mattress sag or a manufacturing fault).

When trying one of our mattresses in-store you notice that some of the mattresses have been “broken in” due to repeated use. This presentation provides you with more accurate expectations for the way your mattress will feel.

Why Your New Mattress Feels Softer Than in Store

The mattress you tested and loved in-store has been layed on by hundreds of people who have come through the store and tried them. This repeated use has softened up the mattress and reflects how it will feel after the “break-in” period. After 8 to 12 weeks of general use in your home this is exactly how your mattress will feel. Do not be alarmed when you first lay on your mattress and it feels completely different to the one you tested and loved. This is part of the process of a new mattress. A quick solution to soften the mattress is to add a temporary foam layer until the mattress has naturally softened.

Understanding the Mattress “Break in” Process

Every mattress is different and some will even have little to no body impressions. Others which are on the plush side of the scale will have a more pronounced body indentation for continual repeated use. This is natural and not something to be alarmed by.

To be perfectly clear, you may not fall in love with your new mattress at first. It may not feel like the bed you tried when you visited our warehouse. But the good news is that your mattress will adjust to your body and it will take on the “showroom feel” after the proper amount of time and pressure. In the end, your new bed will feel like it did the day you first fell in love with it.

Tips for Breaking in a New Mattress

Tip #1. Certain mattress constructions will take on more body impressions than others while some won’t change at all. For instance, a soft foam pillow top layer will indent to your body shape more than a micro pocket coil mattress.

Tip #2. How long does it take to break in a new mattress? Most mattresses will take about 8 to 12 weeks to adjust to your body and soften up to the “showroom feel.”

Tip #3. If you can’t wait or want to speed up this process, try walking back and forth, or jumping on the mattress (I know, its not what we were taught as kids, and our parents would scold us for the mere thought of it!). This will help loosen up the fiber's in the foam.

Above all else, remember you have more than likely slept on the same mattress for years and your body has become accustomed to the exact feel of your previous mattress. Changing to a new mattress will be a shock to your body and take time to adjust.
